Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders

Diabetes

We are the medical specialty that treats diseases of endocrine glands including diabetes. Endocrine glands produce and secrete hormones. Hormones are secreted into the bloodstream allowing tissues to function properly. If the glands do not produce the right amount of hormones, diseases can develop.

Endocrinology diseases fall into three categories:

  • Tumors in the glands, both cancerous and benign
  • Gland hypersecretion which produces too much of a hormone
  • Gland hyposecretion which produces too little of a hormone

For example, not producing enough insulin hormone causes diabetes, while the overproduction of the thyroid hormone causes hypothyroidism.

Most of our patients are referred to us by their primary care physician because their bloodwork revealed a potential problem with hormone functioning or because of tumors found in their glands. The goal of an endocrinologist is to restore hormonal balance in the body and restore the metabolism.
